TINMOUTH - John E. Duhnoski, 94, passed away peacefully at Mountain View Rehabilitation Center on Nov. 7, 2011. He was born Nov. 2, 1917, in Garden City Park, Long Island, the son of Eugene and Catherine Duhnoski.

He married Ella (née Janssen) and they built their home and raised their family in Garden City Park, New York. Ella predeceased John in 2010 after 69 years of marriage.

John served in the WWII European Theater for three years as an Army heavy equipment operating engineer and was involved in D-Day and received the Purple Heart. His name has been inscribed on the Wall of Honor at Eisenhower Park in New York.

When John returned home, he continued to operate large construction equipment, particularly the crane, and was very active in the community, serving as commander of the Garden City Park VFW and as a volunteer firefighter.

John and Ella moved to Tinmouth in 1989 and became active members of their new community. John attended Tinmouth Community Church where he served as a greeter welcoming people, handing out bulletins and sharing amusing stories. He made new friends wherever he went. He always had a garden and fishing and horseshoes were always a favorite pastime. He was introduced to sugaring, which he so enjoyed. He always had a joke and a smile. He named his cat, Puppy.

He was predeceased by several sisters and brothers and is survived by many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Patrick's Church in Wallingford. Burial will be in the Tinmouth Cemetery. A reception will follow in the Tinmouth Community Church.

Friends may call on Sunday from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Wallingford Aldous Funeral Home.

Contributions, in lieu of flowers, can be made to Tinmouth Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund, PO Box 25, Wallingford, VT 05773.
