Samuel Otto Allen was born in Santa Ana, California. He was the son of Edward and Ena Mae (Bouse) Allen. He grew up on Balboa Island, Newport Beach and attended public schools there. He was a graduate of Newport Harbor High School where he excelled in swimming. He also worked as a lifeguard with the Red Cross in Newport Beach. In September 1942, Samuel Allen enlisted in the US Army and eventually trained as a student aviator at Pampa (Texas) Army Air Base . He was killed when his dual engine plane crashed 11 miles west of Canton, OK during his training. He was scheduled to receive his flight wings five days after the accident.
