Preface statement from Mr. Chafee...

"The statements of fact contained in this history are as nearly accurate as the writer has found it practicable to present them. I have gathered from every source that was available and have used such part of matter which others have written as I thought would be of interest to the present and future generation, am indebted to Elgin H. Martin for careful and hard work in the collection of material relating to the soldiers of war times, to George B. Rhoads for a portion of that which he wrote for previous history, to Rev.Jasper L. Douthit for his account of the schools and to divers ministers whose work I have abridged to give a fair statement of of the churches of the county."
