SIOUX CITY -- Melvin E. Marshall, 68, of Queen Creek, Ariz., formerly of Sioux City, passed away Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011, after a short hospitalization at the VA Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz.

Memorial services will be 5 p.m. Saturday at Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park in Mesa Ariz. Condolences may be sent online at www.mariposagardens.com.

Mel was born in Sioux City, in 1943, the eldest son of Melvin and Lillian Marshall. Mel spent 15 years in the U.S. Navy and then worked as a mechanical engineer in Green Bay, Wis., Berlin, N.H., and Baton Rouge, La. Mel and his wife retired in Arizona five years ago.

He enjoyed traveling, hiking and working with the San Tan Chapter of the Arizona Archeological Society. Mel helped set up the first San Tan Chapter of AAS and was president of the chapter for two years. Throughout his life, Mel enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his family camping, hunting and fishing. He was an avid reader and enjoyed novels about history and the military.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra; three children, Matt Marshall, Jane Mendez and Tricia Marshall; three grandchildren, Jordan Marshall, Joshua Marshall and Brianna Marshall; and two brothers, Keith in Phoenix, Ore., and Richard in Medford, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother.
