Son of John W. and Eliza Williams Roberts.

After his schooling in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he entered the employ of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway until he came to California in 1885. He engaged in banking at Colton with his father and his brother-in-law, J.W. Davis, establishing the First National Bank of Colton. In 1892 he became interested with his father in the San Bernardino National Bank. He was a member of the Masonic orders and the lodge of Elks of San Bernardino and of exclusive clubs in Los Angeles. In 1889, he married Maude Adams of that city. He was a banker-capitalist, orange grower, man of big business affairs and as one San Bernardino's leading citizens, he assumed the presidency of the San Bernardino National Bank, following the death of his father in 1903. He likewise became president of the First National Bank of Colton, also succeeding his father, and later became president of the First National Bank of Rialto. In 1904, Mr. Roberts brought about the organization of the San Bernardino County Savings Bank, of which he was also president.

At the earnest solicitation of the Governor Hiram W. Johnson, he accepted the appointment of state treasurer in 1911, following the appointment of W.W. Williams, who was elected state treasurer to the office of state superintendent of banking. Mr. Roberts served as state treasurer for four years, during which time he brought about many important changes in the state's financial system. He resigned from that office and returned to direct his interests in San Bernardino remaining there throughout the year 1915.

In 1916 he received a call to the first vice presidency of the the First National Bank of Los Angeles, to which institution he gave four years of untiring and unremitting endeavor. In January of 1920 he resigned to return to his home city of San Bernardino, commenting that he had seen the terrific strain of strenuous business activities undermine the health of so many of his friends and family that he had decided to relinquish as many duties as possible. In a few short months, his life was over.
