Sylvania Alice Simms, 89, of Arthurdale, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at Windy Hill Manor, Kingwood.
She was born Jan. 14, 1913, in Hundred, a daughter of the late William Harvey and Lydia Belle Bland Dailey. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, which included seven brothers and seven sisters.
Alice was a cook at the Meadowview and Valley Elementary Schools. She was well known for her cooking and baking abilities. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church for over 60 years, where she served as Sunday School and Bible School teacher. She also served as charge secretary for a number of years.
Alice also was very active with the Preston County Senior Citizens, where she served as the organization's secretary and coordinated trips for the group. She served in the Silver Haired Legislature, was an active member of the Republican Party, and was an election worker for a number of years.
She was survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Susan D. and Terry L. Smith of Arthurdale; a granddaughter and spouse, Shannon L. and Lorn A. Wolfe of Morgantown; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Benton Simms, in November 1974; seven brothers, Johnnie, Milton, Edward, Arthur, Kerney, Robert and Michael; and six sisters, Socia Renner, Louisiana Dailey, Georgia Dailey, Olive May Dailey, Russia Dailey and Gertrude Haught.
Burial was in the Gordon Cemetery.
