Elizabeth "Jill" Riherd Dimbleby

Born August 22, 1918 in Barron County, Kentucky the middle child of 7, Elizabeth Riherd was raised on a farm situated on top of Mammoth Caves National Park. Her father took one look at the new baby and proclaimed, "Why she's not big enough to be an Elizabeth, she's no bigger than a gil!" (the smallest farm measurement) Thus, she became Jill.

Jill went to farm and town school (year round schooling), graduating two years early. Since there wasn't much of a social life for a shy, 16 year old at the big University of Western Kentucky, she stuck to her books and graduated in three years. At 19 she became a high school teacher in Park City, KY, where many of her students (especially the farm boys) were nearly her age. She had to learn to forbid chewing tobacco in the classroom and also to diplomatically rebuff the advances of some of the older boys.

After 4 years of teaching, World War II broke out and she enlisted in the Navy. As a lieutenant in the WAVES in New York City, she coded and decoded messages from ships in the Atlantic. She often had anxious admirals nervously peering over her shoulder. During their off hours, Jill and her friends would see Broadway plays, go to Hialeah race track or visit the famous sights, all foreign to a Kentucky farm girl.

Near the end of the war she was transferred to the 11th Naval District, San Diego. It was in Coronado that Jill met a young marine lieutenant who told her on their first date that she was the girl he was going to marry. His prophecy came true. After they finished their graduate studies at Stanford, they became Mr. and Mrs. Warren (Tom) Tucker III in 1947. Tom worked in the insurance industry and Jill in the wind tunnel at Ames Laboratory as the human calculator to the designer of the swept back wing. They made their home in Palo Alto. In 1950 Warren Benjamin was born. Only days after Janet was born in 1952, Tom was sent to the Korean War for what was anticipated to be a short "police action". The duration was considerably longer. Nancy was born in 1954. Shortly thereafter Jill was unexpectedly left a widow.

In 1957 Jill married H. William (Bill) Dimbleby. He brought a daughter, Kathy to the new family. In 1963 they moved to Los Gatos. Jill taught math at Ida Price Junior High and Bill was a general contractor, and later a building inspector. Not long after all of the children were married and happily settled, it became apparent that Bill's formerly sharp cognitive skills were diminishing. Though Jill never complained, it was a long and painful journey for the pair. Bill died in 1994.

A loving mother and proud grandmother, Jill was also devoted to her church and dear friends in the Presbyterian Women's group. In recent years she loved to organize outings to plays and have small gatherings of friends in for lunch or tea. "Kind, loving, considerate, charitable, patient, resilient, upbeat" we have heard from so many in the last days of what Jill meant to them.

Preceded in death by brothers, W.T., Cecil, Leslie, James, Maurice and sister Marie. Jill is survived by stepdaughter Kathy Dimbleby McCracken and her children Mary, Tina, Douglas, William and great granddaughter Christy, Warren "Ben " Tucker (Nancy) and children Alyson and Geoffrey, Janet Tucker Garr (Bennett) and daughter Emma, and Nancy Tucker Larsson (Peter) and daughters Ingrid and Annika (Doug Fraser) and many relations and friends.

A Memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Monday November 14 at The Los Gatos Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at Oak Hills Cemetery, San Jose. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Habitat For Humanity or to the charity of your choice.
