Dr. H. J. Whalen Expires Suddenly At Johnstown, Pa.

Former Pastor Of The First Baptist Church Of This City Passes Away SUnday Evening
            --------------------------
Rev. Dr. Henry J. Whalen, aged 65 years. pastor of the Memorial Baptist church of Johnstown, Pa., and former pastor of the First Baptist church of this city, passed away at the parsonage. 126 Venango street, Johnstown Sunday evening at 7:30 according to word received this morning by C. L. Hughes of Euclid avenue, this city.
The death of Dr. Whalen comes as a shock to his many friends in this city as no one was aware of his critical illness. Although he had suffered a nervous break down some time ago, his condition was not considered serious until a few days ago. His illness terminated in a stroke of apoplexy early Sunday evening.
The last service that Dr. Whalen conducted in his church was the communion service on June 2.
He was born at Lime Rock, Conn., sixty five years ago, a son of John and Margaret Whalen. After receiving his early education in the public schools he studied for the ministery. He was graduated from Colgate University and later from the Theological Seminary of New York City.
Although Dr. Whalen has spent forty years in the ministery he had made but few changes in that time. Previous to going to Johnstown in May, 1927, he had been pastor of the First Baptist church of Greensburg, Pa., and preceding that charge had served the First Baptist church of this city for eight years. Former pastorates had been held at Carbondale, Pa., and in New York and New Jersey.
Dr. Whalen was a member of the State Board of Missions and was one of the most outstanding Baptist ministers of Pennsylvania.
Besides his widow, Mrs. Laureta Smith Whalen he leaves two daughters, Miss Marguerite at home and Frances, wife of J. R. Whelpley who were married on June 18 and two sons, Henry Jr., and Russell a student of Richmond college, at Richmond. Va.
The funeral party will leave Thursday for Oneonta. N. Y., where additional services will be held and burial made.
