Edwin was a Lieutenant in the US Air Force, and a pilot.. On September 12, 1945 the aircraft he was flying developed propeller trouble. The engine caught fire and lost power. He was unable to reach a runway at Thurleigh (England) and made a belly landing in an adjacent clover field, where the aircraft skidded for 350 feet before coming to a stop. He was uninjured and the aircraft was too badly damaged for repair.

He was employed by Boeing/Rockwell International. His life slowly went downhill and was placed under the guardianship of a trustee by the State of Virginia after he was found living as a squaller, even though he was financially independent. His mental capacity had diminished. Edwin died in a private care home.
