DEATH OF JOHN E. LEE

No death which has occurred in DeWitt or vicinity recently has caused such general and sincere grief as that of John E. Lee, who died at his home four miles of DeWitt, on the morning of Feb. 5th in the 64th year of his age. He was born in Chariton county, Missouri, May 23, 1837. He moved to Carroll county in 1865. He was married in 1868 to Miss Sue Arnold, of Carrollton, who departed this life in 1870. To this union two children were born, both of whom died in infancy. In 1872 he was again married to Miss Octavia Everett, who, with several children survive him.

He obtained a scholarly education. Had he lived in ancient days of the Greeks and Romans he would have ranked a pier among them. He was educated at McGee, Fayette and St. Charles colleges, being a graduate of the last named. He taught school successfully and in a creditable manner for a number of years. He was a man of more than ordinary ability. He was converted and joined the M. E. church, South, at the age of thirteen and lived a most exemplary Christian life for over fifty years. He was a man of great decision of character and having determined to live a Christian life, he never wavered in his purpose, as all who knew him could testify. With an inspiring look ahead he saw the end of his suffering and seemed to turn his eyes upon the glories of heaven, happy in the realization of an eternal home beyond the stars, he fell asleep peacefully at 8 o'clock. All that devoted relatives and friends could do was done and when his soul took flight into the great beyond, loving hands were ministering to his every earthly want.

During Monday and Tuesday there was a constant stream of visitors at the residence to manifest their grief and sympathy. His death has made a deep, sorrowing grief which only time can heal. Dear friends, though your husband and father can not come back to you, you can, in God's own appointed time meet him on the bright shore where partings are no more. Funeral services were conducted at the Pleasant Park church Wednesday afternoon by Rev. E. E. Bostwick, and the remains were interred in the church grave yard by the Masonic fraternity of which he has been a member for thirty years.

To the bereaved family we extend our hearty sympathy.
