James was born November 28, 1841 in Union Township, Morgan County, Ohio, son of Joseph Brown and Jane Alexander. He died September 13, 1867 in Ohio, aged 25 years, 9 months, and 16 days, and was buried in Devils Half Acre Cemetery in Perry County, Ohio. His gravestone there is inscribed James A. Son of Joseph & J, Brown. Died Sep. 13, 1867 Aged 25 Ys. 10 M. 12 D.

On October 10, 1861 James was united in marriage to Susanna Stump. She was born Aug. 21, 1841 in Ohio, daughter of Jacob & Sarah (Parke) Stump. Their three children, all born in Ohio, were: Nancy Jane (1863-1886)

After her husband's death Susanna moved in with her father and stepmother as found in the 1870 US Census Report. Her stepmother, Nancy Brown Laff Stump, was James' aunt. Susanna married Ira Don Tyson on Nov. 17, 1873 in Morgan Co., Ohio.

In the 1880 US Census Report her son Joseph was listed in the household of his grandparents, Joseph and Jane Brown. By 1886, Susanna, Ira, Nancy Jane, & Nettie had moved to Galva, McPherson Co., Kansas, where Susanna's two sisters, Sarah and Mary Fanetta "Nettie" lived.
