Memorial Service Sunday for Donald Harland

College Springs (Special) A short memorial service was held Sunday morning during the worship hour for Don Harland who was reported last week to have died in a Jap prison camp at Hoten, Manchuko. Don was born near Clarinda June 11, 1919, and when ten years of age moved with his mother to College Springs where he joined the Methodist church in 1932.

He was graduated from Clarinda high school and attended junior college for one semester. His entry into the air corps was made in November 1939 and in September 1941 he was sent to the Philippines. He was stationed at Clark Field when it fell and was taken prisoner there by the Japs.

During his imprisonment only four cards were received by his parents.

A large basket of flowers was place at the altar by his family and prayers were offered by the pastor, Rev Jackson.

Don leaves his mother and step-father, Mr and Mrs Walter Harper of College Springs, his father, Paul Harland of near Clarinda; brothers Delmar of Pendleton, Ore; Gerald of the Marine corps, Billy at home, and sisters Hazel of Des Moines, Mrs Robert Decker of College Springs and a half-sister, Aileen, at home.
