Robert served as a Private, Company C, 701st Tank Destroyer Battalion, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Onondaga County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on January 23, 1942 at Fort Niagara, Youngstown, New York. He was noted as being employed in the production of beverages and also as Single, without dependents.

He was "Killed In Action" during the war and was awarded a Purple Heart.

Syracuse Herald Journal - Wedesday Dec 30, 1942

Pvt Robert William Dunn, 22, U.S.A. was killed in action in Africa on Dec 11, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Dunn of 212 Beley Avenue Mattydale, were informed today in a telegram from the War Department.

The telegrame stated that Pvt Dunn was killed in action in "defense of his country." He was serving with a tank destroyer unit. He was inducted in the Army last Jan 5.

The soldier's father, William Dunn, served 12 months overseas in France during the first World War.

Private Dunn was born in Syracuse, but had made his home in Mattydale since he was three years old. He was a graduate of Mattydale Grammar School and later attended Vocational High School. He formerly was employed at the Solvay Process Company.

Surviving besides his parents are a sister, a nephew, his grandfather, and several aunts.
