She graduated from Wheelock Teachers’ College in 1938, from Boston University School of Education in 1955, from Boston University School of Law in 1958 and was a lawyer in private practice. She was on the counsel for Boston Juvenile Court, in 1960, Treasurer of the Boston School Committee, (1962-67), a member of the Boston City Council, in 1969 and president of the Massachusetts Association of Women Lawyers. In 1971, she was elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-second Congress, serving 1973. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, she was the head of a Boston anti-busing group, until 1976 and a member of the Boston City Council, (1974-81).
