Stivers, was born at Beemerville, Sussex County and went to Orange County when a young man, opened a general store in Ridgebury, N Y., then a dry goods store in Middletown, and in 1868, went into the publishing business. John D. Stivers' wife was Louise M. Greene, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Greene, of Middletown, They were married Sept. 17, 1908. His mother was Mary Elizabeth Stewart, of Stewarttown, near Ridgebury, N. Y.
The deceased had a career that combined success in politics, journalism, and active participation in affairs to the time of his death. He was a member of many patriotic and fraternal organizations, some of whom participated in the funeral rites.
Surviving relatives are: the widow, three children, Janet Louise, Moses D. Stivers, a Senior at Colgate, and Nancy Stewart, at home, also a brother and sister, Dr. Moses A. Stivers and Mrs. Christina S. Mills, of Middletown, N. Y. The Stivers home was at 60 Highland Avenue, Middletown.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. from the First Presbyterian Church, of Middletown, N. Y., of which he was a member. Rev. Albert W. Scheckells, Jr., conducted the service. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery.
