Born in Seattle in 1912, Robert Lewis Durham was raised in Tacoma. He was educated at the College of Puget Sound, and graduated cum laude from the University of Washington School of Architecture in 1936. Upon graduation he joined Seattle architect B. Dudley Stuart as a draftsperson. He then went on to work with the Federal Housing Administration in Okanogan County as a cost analyst and as a plans exmainer for the Seattle Building Department. In 1941, Durham rejoined Stuart to form the architectural firm of Stuart & Durham. The partnership survived ten years until Stuart's retirement in 1951. After a brief period as principal of his own firm, Robert L. Durham & Associates, Durham partnered with fellow architects David R. Anderson and Aaron Freed, to form Durham Anderson Freed. No stranger to civic involvement, Durham was very active within the architectural community both locally and nationally. A former president of the Seattle Chapter AIA, Durham went on to head the Washington State Chapter in 1954. (information provided by Catherine Westergaard)
