"T. Green-called 'Slick'-was a painter and occasional store clerk who was known for not taking life too seriously. A tall figure in bill cap, khaki shirt and pants that came to the top of his high, laced shoes and with a big, crooked-stem pipe, he liked nothing better than going off hunting or fishing-unless it was telling jokes downtown, then, slapping a knee, leading a chorus of laughter."
"He was scolded by a foreman while working for a time on the WPA because of his constant joke-telling. 'Damnit, Green, you're gonna have to shut up!' the boss said. 'When these boys are laughin' all the time I can't get any work out of 'em'."
*********
William T. Green, Jr. was born into a midwestern, farming family that migrated to the Indian Territory of Oklahoma at the turn of the 20th Century.
The Great Depression hit his family like many others in this semi-arid, rural area.
In 1930, William Jr. got WPA work as a laborer for the City of Wewoka in Seminole County, OK; and married Irene Hogg. Little is known of her and their marriage ended within a few years.
In 1942, he enlisted and served in the US Army as a Private until the end of WW II. His civilian skills were listed as a brick and stone mason on his application.
Apparently, he lived in the Muskogee, OK area until the age of 77; but the where-abouts of his remains are unknown.
James Etter's description is the best we will probably have of William "Slick" Green :0)
JT
Addendum: William had 2 Military Records with the birthdate above. SSN Record cited 5 Jan 1909 (Possibly a typo/error for 1905.) 4 Census Records cited about 1905; 1 cited about 1907. Seems like not everyone knew, including William? Or this was one of his jokes.
