Phillips O Swain was the son of Samuel Oakleigh Swain and Dorothy Phillips Swain(source 1930 us census). Samuel apparently went by his middle name. Phillips was the grandson of Elmer E and Eva L Swain of Belmont, NH. Elmer and Eva are Samuel's parents (source 1910 us census). Why Elmer and Eva are listed as Phillips parents on the inscription is unclear.

Phillip served as a Private, Battery A, 17th Airborne Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Belknap County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on September 21, 1944 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.

Phillip "Died Of Wounds" received in action during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart.
