Actress. She began her theater stage career at age 7 when she played the lead male role in “Little Lord Fauntleroy” and made her Broadway theatre debut in 1925 in a play titled "One Of The Family." Most famous in motion pictures for playing roles mothers and grandmothers, she portrayed mother of actor Jimmy Stewart’s characters in four films, "Of Human Hearts," "Vivacious Lady," "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington," and her best known role as 'Ma Bailey' in the 1946 classic "It's A Wonderful Life." In 1971 she played Jimmy Stewart's mother again on television in an episode of "The Jimmy Stewart Show". She was twice nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress – one for her portrayal of Rachel Jackson, wife of 7th United States President Andrew Jackson in 1936’s “The Gorgeous Hussy” and one for her role of ‘Mary Wilkins' in 1938’s “Of Human Hearts”. In 1976 she won an Emmy Award of Best Actress for a Single Appearance in a Drama or Comedy Series for her appearance as “Aunt Martha Corrine Walton in the 1970s family drama television series “The Waltons”. She was given a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1718 Vine Street in Hollywood, California.
