British mariner and tailor.

First apprenticeship as a sailor with Messrs Barbour in Liverpool, Scott went over to the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co., where he was placed on one of their China Stations. After three to four years he went to Japan where he settled in Kobe. He was a founding member in 1869 of the Masonic Lodge in Kobe. In 1871 he established his own firm J. M. Scott & Co., Auctioneers and Commission Merchants in Hyôgo and then transferred to Kobe in 1873.
In 1876 he moved to Kyoto as First Officer of the British P & O Steam Navigation Co. In an accident, he lost a leg and while in hospital in Yokohama, he met and fell in love with a Japanese Nurse, Kinoshita Yuki.

In 1882, he was a Purser with the Mitsubishi Steam Ship Co., and in 1884 he was on the Nagoya-maru. In 1885 the Mitsubishi Mail Steamship Co. became part of Nippon Yûsen Kaisha (NYK - Japan Mail Steamship Co.). He remained Purser on the Nagoya-maru under NYK through 1887, when he was assigned to the Satsuma-maru; in 1888 he was purser on the Saikio-maru. In 1885, while employed with the NYK, he applied for shares of the Japan Brewery Co. and on a Directors' meeting on May 19th, 1886 his paying of two shares was announced.

In 1893, he changed tack and took a job with The London and New York Tailoring Co., in Yokohama. In 1895 he established his own firm named Scott's Tailoring Co., settled in Yokohama # 108 running it until his death.

Son of merchant George Scott and Mary Marshall Scott.

Married Kinoshita Yuki (the daughter of a silk merchant) on February 14th, 1882 at the HBM Consulate for Hyôgo and Osaka.

Father of Miya Josephine (Scott) Duus, Irene Caroline (Scott) Smith, and Ernest Marshall Scott.
