He owned a store in Calais Maine on Main St. called Clark Variety Store. The building is still there near the end of Boardman St. He was also a druggist and bootmaker. He first married to Esther Robinson BURRILL, 5 February 1822 in China, Kennebec, Maine and later married to Mary Ann Nichols CHENEY, 7 September 1834 in Calais, Washington, Maine.
On August 8, 1838 He is listed as dead by first wife Esther Burrill. This is NOT so. He and his first wife Esther did not get along and he left her but not divorcing her. He was an abolitionist who was a dedicated opponent to slavery which probably came from his Quaker upbringing.
Note: The grave has him born in 1808.
