Robert served as a 1st Lt. and pilot on B-17 #44-8043 in the 429th Bomber Squadron, 2nd Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Onondaga County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on January 16, 1943 in Syracuse, New York. He was noted as being employed as a heat treater and also as Single, with dependents.

He was "Killed In Action" during the war and was awarded a Purple Heart.

Listed as missing in action over Germany since Oct 4, Lt. Robert B. Donovan was killed in action on that date, the War Department announced. Word of his death came in a telegram to his mother, Mrs. Bertha Donovan of 482 West Castle Street.

Pilot of a Flying Fortress based in Italy, Lt. Donovan was leader of his squadron and had been awarded the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters.

He joined the Army Air Forces in January 1942 and was graduated in Jan 1944 from the pilot school at Moody Field, Valdocia Ga.

Before going overseas he trained as Maxwell field and Lakeland Field, Fla, and Bainbridge Field, Ga. He had been overseas since last May.

The Syracusian was promoted to first lieutenant in September.

His brother, Francis W. Donovan is in Italy with a Fifth Army tank battalion.
