Son of Franklin Alexander Fortner and second wife, Dicie Lula Archer Fortner, of Iredell County NC.


Married Lula Dora Johnson on 18 Dec 1907 in Iredell County NC.

They were parents of five children:

Stedman Alexander "Ted" 1908-1981

Dorothy Sarah "Dicie" 1911-1972

John Marvin 1912-1914

James Edward "Jim" 1915-1963

Frances Elizabeth "Lib" 1917-2003


At the time of his death, Jim was a salesman at Carolina Motor Company in Mooresville NC. Prior to that position, he had farmed with his father on the family farm on Mooresville-China Grove Road in Iredell County NC.


He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Mooresville NC. He and his wife were buying a home on McNeeley Avenue in Mooresville NC when he died.


Jim and both of his parents died between January and May of 1919 from pneumonia following the Spanish Flu during the epidemic of 1918-1919.


At his death, his wife was widowed with four children ages 2-10 after 12 years of marriage.


His widow survived him by 15 years and 9 days. She is buried several rows away with her parents.
