Rev. Koon passed away Saturday November 5, 2011. Born in Lexington County, he was the youngest of 9 children of the late Charlie T. and Rebecca Shirey Koon and was a member of Lake Murray Baptist Church.
Rev. Koon retired from Post Engineers at Fort Jackson as a Branch Chief in 1975. He was ordained as a Southern Baptist Pastor in 1957 and pastored for 50 years, serving: Corinth Baptist of Salley, Harmony Baptist of Gaston, Beulah Baptist of Leesville, Hillcrest Baptist of Gaston, Providence Baptist of Orangeburg, Rocky Grove Baptist of Salley, Berlin Baptist of Wagener, Christian Fellowship of Gaston, Mt. Herman of Pelion, and interim in others.
Having been reared on a Lexington County farm, he felt a special calling for the common working people. He had a gift for meeting friends, and always looked for the good in people and took the time to help those in need.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Jennie Porth Koon, sons, Larry (Kathy) Koon, Ted (Cheryl) Koon, Steve (Jennie) Koon, Rev. George (Deborah) Koon, all of Lexington, sister, Alice Koon Crapps of Leesville, grandchildren, Bruce (Karen) Koon, Travis (Anna) Koon, Jonathan (Misty) Koon, Jason (Melissa) Koon, Kris Koon, Jody (Lynette) Koon, Jennifer Koon, Bryson Koon, and Allison (Rev. Josh) Powell, 16 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers, Eli, Charles and George Koon, sisters, Ruth Seigler, Julia Lybrand, Mary Lee Hallman, and Sara Swygert, grandchildren, Kevin Koon and Carla Koon Carnes, great-grandchild, Charley Benton Koon.
