Mary Bloom passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2011, at the age of 101. Mary was born April 21, 1910 to the late Max and Elizabeth Packer. She was raised and educated in Holyoke, MA. Mary was predeceased by her three brothers Jack, Ira and Raymond Packer. On June 16, 1935, Mary and Frederick Cohn were married and had 23 happy, wonderful and active years together in Springfield, MA, before his death in 1958. Mary is survived by her daughters, Helaine Levitt and her husband Marvin of Boynton Beach, FL, Louise Cohn Widland and her husband Michael of Weston, CT and Linda Cohen of York, PA; her wonderful grandchildren, Gay-Lisa and Allen Schwalbendorf, Fredi-Ruth Levitt, Robert and Lynn Levitt, Frederick Widland, David and Sondra Widland, Peter Widland, Joshua Cohen and Diana Sanchez, Elyana and Jeremy Funk and Natanya Cohen; nine great grandchildren Eric, Justin, Nathan, Ethan, Riley, Ronan, Audrey, Noa and Julia. In 1966, Mary married Nathan Shatz. Nathan and his family became part of the Cohn family until his death in 1980. Mary is also survived by Nathan's son Stephen Shatz and his family, Geoffrey and Adria and by the family of Malcolm Shatz. Mary later married Herman Bloom who she had known most of her adult life in Springfield, MA. Herman and Mary lived in Florida and Longmeadow, MA. She is survived by Herman's daughters Muriel and her husband Robert Bruskin and Miriam Chaiklin and their families, Jill and David Heaton, Amy and Bob Murah, Joy and John Spadafora and Barry and Gigi Bruskin; great grandchildren, Jeremy, Melissa, Hunter, Jacob, Trevor, Brianna and Brandon. Mary is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and her best friend for almost 70 years, Miriam Baxter. Mary was very fortunate to have such a large extended family and they all were an important part of her life. Among many of Mary's passions she enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, crocheting, baking and entertaining. She was known amongst family and friends of having a zest for life, enjoying adventures and having a positive outlook on life. She prided herself on making her home the centerpiece for her family and friends to get together and appreciate life. Holidays were always special times that were filled with joy for all who participated and created a special bond that was unique and wonderful for all of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mary touched many lives and will be sadly missed, but leaves a lasting legacy that will live on for generations. She was a lifelong member of Temple Beth El in Springfield, The Jewish Community Center and Hadassah. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association . Her funeral service will be held at Ascher-Zimmerman Funeral Home, 44 Sumner Ave., Spfld. on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at 11:00 AM, followed by burial at Beth El Cementery in West Springfield.
