Edwin Teigen Loken, 79, Capitol, SD

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at the Little Missouri Lutheran Church in Capitol for Edwin Teigen Loken, age 79 of Capitol. Interment followed at the Little Missouri Lutheran Cemetery. He died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000 at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.

Edwin Teigen Loken was born December 28, 1920, at Capitol, the son of Martin G. and Elsie Teigen Loken. He grew up on the family ranch and attended country grade schools through the eighth grade. He attended the Camp Crook High School for his freshman year then Carter County High School until graduating in 1939.
He worked on ranches herding sheep before enlisting in the US Marines in June of 1942. He served in the Pacific Theater and was honorably discharged in 1945 when he returned home to the Capitol area. On May 20, 1950, he was married to Betty Summers at the Summers family ranch. They worked on the Loken ranch where they raised their family. Over the years, he enjoyed ranching, raising sheep and cattle, raising potatoes and taking them to the fair. He spent many hours building his shelter belts and planting trees. Edwin's love was for the family and ranch and improving on both of them. He was always known to be working at 7 a.m. but was done by 5 p.m. when the family ate together. He was always involved with all the family activities. He served on the Southeast Electric Board 41 years, during which time he saw rural electricity come into the area and spread throughout the county. Edwin was a member of the Little Missouri Lutheran Church and served on the School Board for District No. 27 for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Betty of Capitol; three sons, Alan Loken and his wife, Marla of Spearfish, Elston Loken and his wife, Melody of Ekalaka, Mont. and Eric Loken of Spearfish; two daughters, Edwina Njos of Bismarck, N.D. and Sonja Bruski and her husband, Joe of Ekalaka; two sisters, Olga Freed of Denver, Colo. and Elsa Hayes of Ridge, Mont.; and 15 grandchildren, Garret, Lori, Oren, Valorie, Sara, Brent, Tyler, Alana, Mary, Aleisha, Kurt, Matthew, Nic, Ryan and Kelsie. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Carsten Loken and infant twin brothers; a sister, Esther and one grandson.
