U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He attended the University of Illinois, graduated from Albion College, in 1911, studied law, admitted to the bar in 1914 and commenced to practice law in St. Ignace, Michigan. He was prosecuting attorney of Mackinac County, (1914-26), St. Ignace City Attorney, (1916-28) and a justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, in 1930. In 1933, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-third Congress and Seventy-fourth Congress, serving until 1936. He was then elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James Couzens, serving (1936-43). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and was chairman of the Mackinac Bridge Authority until his death at age 84.
