Elward John "E.J." Cortez, requisition manager for Avondale Shipyards, died June 7 of an apparent heart attack while vacationing in Paris. He was 58. Mr. Cortez was a lifelong resident of Harvey and Marrero. He was a graduate of St. Aloysius High School and attended Loyola University. He was a member of St. Thomas More Knights of Columbus Council 7226 and Eucharistic Minister Coordinator for Visitation of Our Lady Catholic Church. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America. He was a sergeant in the Marine Corps. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Barbier Cortez; his mother, Rosalie Chimento Cortez; two sons, Michael and Lt. Elward Patrick Cortez; two daughters, Stacy Gongora and Julie Ortego; and five grandchildren. A Mass will be said Saturday at noon at Visitation of Our Lady Catholic Church, 3500 Ames Blvd., Marrero. Visitation will be at the church Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park. Mothe Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
