Mustered into service with Company K, 47th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers on 17 September 1861 as Second Lieutenant. While serving as a 2nd Lieutenant at Fort Jefferson, Tortugas, Florida under Lieutenant Colonel George W. Alexander, promoted to First Lieutenant on 2 May 1863.
