Cyrus was born in Butler County, Ohio. His father was Andrew Rowen, recognized as one of the earliest pioneers of Fountain County, Indiana. Cyrus' mother was Elizabeth (Drollinger) Rowen and they had at least 13 children.

At age 23 Cyrus was united in marriage with Rachel Reeder on March 22, 1836. They had 3 children, Amos, Nelson and Charlotte.

When baby Charlotte was 2 years old, her mother, Rachel died in 1843.

The following year on January 28, 1844, Indiana Marriages records Cyrus' second marriage. He married Amanda Jane Groves in Vermillion County. To this union was born 9 children. When Amanda's youngest child, William Harvey was almost 2&1/2 years old, she died on February 23, 1863. Now Cyrus had to bury his second wife.

Cyrus was 51 years old by that time with 12 children. That same year in 1863, Cyrus married a 3rd wife, Hannah Tingle. The following year she gave birth to their 1st son and they named him George Washington Rowen. They had a 2nd son in 1868, James Loren Rowen, giving Cyrus a total of 14 children.

On 1880 Census, Cyrus is farming in Nebraska. 1885 Census lists him as a retired farmer. He is now 73 years old, and his youngest son is age 17. Cyrus lived to be 86 years old. He died on October 16, 1898 in Nemaha, Nebraska. He was laid to rest in Sheppard Cemetery in Hardin County, Iowa.
