He was born June 23, 1929 in Loganton, Clinton County, to the late Wilbur Edwin and Armina Irene (Stamm) Matter.
He was employed with Ivan Hoover's Garage in Harrisburg and later farmed and operated an auto dismantling business and towing service, retiring in 1995; a 1947 graduate of Mifflinburg High School; an Army veteran, serving in the Korean War; associated with the Church of the Living Water, Millerstown, and taught Sunday school at the former St. James United Methodist Church, Millerstown; and enjoyed watching TV and going to church.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Jean "Dottie" (Kline) Matter; three children, Timothy A. of Millerstown, Richard L. Matter of Rochester, N.Y., and Sandra J. Smithson of York Springs; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two brothers, Warren of Liverpool and Robert of Trevorton; a sister, Alice Miller of Liverpool, an uncle, Miller Stamm of Loganton; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Matter.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011 in the Church of the Living Water (former St. James U.M.C.), Route 235, Millerstown, with pastor John White officiating. Burial was in St. James United Methodist Cemetery, Millerstown.
Viewing was 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Nov. 5.
