John T. Gay was in 4th Georgia Inf. Ripley's Brigade. He enlisted as a Pvt. on April 26,1861. On June 27, 1862 he was promoted to 3rd LT. On Sept 17,1862 Ripley's BD. was part of the counterattack against the Federal lines in the East Woods, Dunker Church, West Woods and Cornfield at Antietam MD. John received his first wound of the war there at Antietam and captured. He was exchanged in Dec 1862. Gay was wounded a 2nd time at Ft. Stevens outside Washington D.C. and again 3rd time at Ft. Stedman during the Petersburg campaign on March 25,1865. On April 9,1865 the war ended with Gen. Lee's surrender. 19 days later John Gay died of his wounds. Co. B,4th Ga. Inf. Regt.
