ALTAMONT — Julia A. Alwerdt, 98, of Altamont died at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011, at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital, Effingham.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont, with the Rev. Dr. James Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held for two hours prior to services. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice. Online condolences may be left at www.giesekingfh.com.

Julia was born Dec. 15, 1912, in Moccasin Township, rural Effingham County, the daughter of August G. and Augusta (Becker) Berg. She married Christopher J. Alwerdt on April 20, 1952, in Springfield, and he preceded her in death in 1994.

Julia was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Altamont, where she served with the Ladies Aid. She was a lifelong member of Gieseking-Schwerdtfeger VFW Post 7676 Ladies Auxiliary, where she had been president. She was a lifelong member of the DAV Auxiliary Chapter 7, where she had served as commander. She had served on the Altamont Library Board. She held volunteering in high esteem and would be proud to be remembered for that.

She is survived by her daughter, Lila Jean Haegele (special friend, Michael Jones) of Springfield, Ore.; sister, Lydia Holste of St. Petersburg, Fla.; granddaughter, Kayte Bishop (husband, Jim) of San Mateo, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother; one sister; and son-in-law, Ron Haegele.
