Edward (Sonny) Segrue was one of three children, and the only son, of Thomas Arthur (Tom) Segrue (1894-1966) and Bernice Blanche Beard Segrue (1901-1976). His father was the son of Stephen Edward Segrue (1858-1901) and Caroline Tassin Dufour Segrue (1858-1934). His mother was the daughter of Martin Willis Beard (1861-1934) and Elodie Bordelon (1866-1960). Sonny's Segrue's great grandfather was Irish immigrant James Segrue (b. 1838 in Ireland; immigrated before 1850 to Philadelphia; d. about 1878 in New Orleans) and his great grandmother was Anastasia Tobin Segrue (born in Ireland about 1833; d. in New Orleans 12 Feb. 1868.

When Sonny was 5 to about 17, his father was a street car conductor in New Orleans on the streetcar Desire. At age 19, Edward enlisted in the Army (1 March 1943) and he served for the duration of the war.

Sonny became the husband of Beverly Lassere (b. 1928) and father of Lynn M. Segrue (b. 1955). Sonny and Beverly married on 27 June 1953 in New Orleans.
