His mother was the daughter of Martin Willis Beard (1861-1934) and Elodie Bordelon (1866-1960). Sonny's Segrue's great grandfather was Irish immigrant James Segrue (b. 1838 in Ireland; immigrated before 1850 to Philadelphia; d. about 1878 in New Orleans) and his great grandmother was Anastasia Tobin Segrue (born in Ireland about 1833; d. in New Orleans 12 Feb. 1868.
When Sonny was 5 to about 17, his father was a street car conductor in New Orleans on the streetcar Desire. At age 19, Edward enlisted in the Army (1 March 1943) and he served for the duration of the war.
