Leroy was born Nov. 3, 1919, and grew up in Burr. His parents, Hulda and Lars Saltee, operated the Burr Store. At the age of 16, he started hauling grain with his dad.

On Dec. 27, 1941, Leroy was united in marriage to Margaret Hinsdale. On April 28, 1942, Leroy was called to serve his country in the Army during WWII. Later they had two more daughters, Pat and Peggy.

During retirement he drove school bus and had a small engine and appliance repair business in his garage. For the past 25 years Leroy and Margaret wintered in San Benito, Texas, and spent the rest of the year at Lake Cochrane, where they had remodeled the old Lake Cochrane Resort.

He was a member of the East Highland Lutheran Church, rural Brandt, S.D. He was also a member of the Peden-Cole American Legion Post #109 in Gary. His commitment to his family and his country are the hallmarks of his 87 years.
