He was descended from John Whitney, who arrived with the Winthrop Fleet, on The Arabella (the ship that followed The Mayflower). He was an American financier, president of the New York Stock Exchange from 1930 to 1935. In 1938, he went to Sing-Sing prison after being convicted embezzlement.
