John was a community leader who taught school in Shanksville, about eight miles from Friedens, and he was a deacon in his church. John explicitly omitted his son Philip from his will and after his death, Philip contested the will. Agreement was reached that Philip’s debts to the estate would be canceled and John Cupp’s will was probated Dec. 29, 1868
