World War II Medal of Honor Recipient. Served as a Private First Class, U.S. Army, Medical Detachment, 30th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division. On January 30, 1944, near Carano, Italy, he braved a German counterattack to rescue 2 wounded men. He crawled 50 yards through machinegun and mortar fire to administer first aid to the more seriously wounded man and dragged him to a covered position 25 yards distant. Despite continuous fire from enemy positions, he returned to aid the second man. As he obtained bandages from his medical kit his right hip was shattered by machinegun fire and a second burst hit his left forearm. Despite severe pain and his dangling left arm, he bandaged the remaining man and dragged him to the same depression to which he had brought the first man. Finding insufficient cover for 3 men at this point, he crawled 75 yards to his company’s position to gain help in retrieving his wounded casualties.
