He was born to John Skeels and Sarah Wheeler Blakesley of Southbury, New Haven, CT. On 25 Sep 1741 he married Patience Hinman (1722-58), daughter of Sgt. Titus Hinman and Sarah Noble. Together they had 4 sons, 3 of which (David, John and Amos) served in the Revolutionary War. On 13 Dec 1758, he married Mehitable Booth (1735-81), daughter of John Booth and Elizabeth Mallory. Together they had 4 boys and one daughter.
