Florian "Fritz" Ackley
Sheila Dubois of Proctor is mourning the death of her father, Florian "Fritz" Ackley. He died Wed., May 22, 2002 in a Duluth hospital. He was 65.

The Hayward resident was born in the township of Hunter in Sawyer County, Wis. He graduated from Hayward High School in 1954. He married Lucille Hamblin and spent 13 years as a professional baseball player, with eight of those years spent under major league contract as a pitcher. He played for the Chicago White Sox, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Pittsburgh Pirates. After retiring from baseball in 1968, he owned and operated the Chip-A-Flo Lodge on the Chippewa Flowage for 13 years.

He is also survived by his wife Lucille, two sons, three other daughters, 11 grandchildren, one step grandson, his mother Anne Ackley, four brothers, three sisters, an aunt, and many nieces and nephews.

Major League Baseball Player. Ackley played for the Chicago White Sox in the early 1960s. In his debut game, he went up against famed pitcher Denny McLain, who was also making his debut. McLain won the match up.
