Funeral services for Fred Capps were held in the chapel of the Barkley Funeral home in Canton Friday, November 22, with the Rev. Roy Griggs, pastor of the Canton Christian Church in charge. Music was furnished by Mrs. Marvin Zenge at the organ. Pallbearers were Joe Hootman, Marvin Zenge, Ragan Shanks, R.V. Shanks, A.N. Allen and Robert Matthews. Burial was in the Forest Grove Cemetery.


Mr. Capps died in St. Mary Hospital in Quincy Tuesday, November 19, where he had been a patient for about five days.


Frederick Silas Capps, the son of John and Rosa McCommons Capps, was born March 20, 1889, at Iberia, Mo. He was united in marriage to Bessie Shanks on November 25, 1909, at Rolla, Mo. To this union three children were born.


Mr. and Mrs. Capps lived at Rolla for several years where he was associated with his father in a department store. Later he was connected with large department stores in St. Louis and with Russell Crofoot in the publishing business in New York City.


He opened a variety store in Canton on Clark Street about 30 years ago. He was immediately successful, and when the Mercantile company was closed, he bought the building at Fourth and Lewis Streets where the store is now located.


Mr. Capps was an active member of all civic and religious affairs. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Kiwanis Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Canton Christian Church and served as a deacon for many years.


Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Roy Kane of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; a son, Robert Capps of Canton, who has been associated with him in the store; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two brothers, Otis Capps of Marble Hill, Mo., and George Capps of Rolla, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. Lena Maggi of Rolla and Mrs. Ida Pulse of Tucson, Arizona; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by a son, Frederick Julian Capps; three brothers and a sister.
