Funeral services for Mrs. Susanna Burner, who passed away Saturday evening about 6:30 at her home northwest of Abingdon on 21 Apr 1934, were held at the Abingdon Christian Church with interment at the Abingdon Cemetery Mausoleum.

Susanna Celeste Burns was born at Knoxville on 5 Feb 1847. She was the younger of two daughters of John and Rebecca Lightner Burns. Her only sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, preceded her in death in 1898.
She was educated at Ewing Seminary in Knoxville, the present St. Mary's School. She was the last survivor of her class, "The Girls of the Sixties." On 16 Aug 1868, she became the bride of Milton Dodge Burner. The next year they moved to the Burner homestead northwest of Abingdon, where she lived since that time.
To this union were born eleven children: James and Henry, deceased, and the following who survive: Edwin of Canton; Willis of Kent, Ohio; Mrs. Melissa Robinson of London Mills; Mrs. Georgia Hunter of Abingdon; Mrs. Etta Davee of Abingdon; Bertha Jameson of Santa Barbara, Cal.; Jessie Medhurst of Canton; Mina Thompson of Bellvue, Col.; and Frances Russell of Santa Barbara, Cal.
Her husband died 7 Dec 1918. There are also 13 grandchildren: Margaret Travis, Elena Landis, Jarvis and Philip Burner, Max Robinson, Helen Harbison, George and Kenneth Davee, Carlyn, Clifford, and Lowell Jameson, and Merle and Ruth Medhurst. There are also two great-grandchildren, Lenore and John Travis.

For 67 years Mrs. Burner had been a loyal member of the Abingdon Christian Church. Family demands prevented her attendance but did not prevent her from conscientiously supporting every cause of her church. In addition to her many relatives, the number of friends who affectionately knew Mrs. Burner as "Grandma" is legion.
