...Clifton R. Wise, age 75, of Marshall, died at his home in the loving care of his family on Tuesday afternoon, November 1, 2011.
...Cliff was born on August 11, 1936 to Clifton E. and Vida Levado (Huff) Wise at their home on Dalyrimple Street in Albion. Cliff moved to the Marshall area with his family after his birth and spent the majority of his life in Marengo Township. He graduated from Marshall High School in 1955 and then attended the Michigan State University Agriculture Short Course.
...In 1959 Cliff entered service to his country in the U.S. Army serving until 1961. He served near the DMZ in Korea in 1960 and 1961. Cliff's first job was working at the Inland Orchards with his family which he did from the age of 10 until 1966. He worked for Charles Cook installing furnaces. In 1957 he went to work for the City of Marshall Water Department. In 1963 he started at Kellogg Company in Battle Creek. He retired in 1993 from Kellogg's where he was a fork lift driver in the warehouse.
...He was married to Phyllis J. Baker on October 7, 1961 at Marshall United Methodist Church. He and Phyllis shared a love of baseball and softball. Cliff played both slow and fast pitch softball in Battle Creek and Marshall leagues until he was 55 years old. He played baseball in Battle Creek. Cliff played two years of semi-pro football He umpired for 25 years for area softball games. He and Phyllis coached youth softball in Albion and Rice Creek leagues, as well as the Marshall High School Girls Redskin Softball team for 13 years until the mid-1990's. They were Marshall High's first coaches for the new sport. In honor and recognition of Cliff's and Phylllis' contribution to the sport the Marshall Public Schools named the high school baseball field Wise Field. Cliff co-coached with his brother Richard a traveling girl's softball team. He coached the first Marshall Rocket Football team.
...Cliff was a 4-H leader for woodworking and also participated in 4-H horse and livestock programs.
Cliff had fond memories of sleigh rides during the winter with his family and grew to love horses as a result. Cliff farmed for most of his life in Marengo Township and had enjoyed farming with horses on occasion. As a young man he traveled with a thrashing crew.
...Cliff was an outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his Grandfather Ray Huff and his family. Cliff and Phyllis enjoyed many years at their family cabin near Lewiston where they would trout fish and hunt. Cliff liked to ice skate and played intramural hockey.
...He was an active member of the Claude E. Hale Post #4073 Veterans Of Foreign Wars Post in Marshall where he served as Jr. and Sr. Vice Post Commander and also as Post Commander for 10 years. He was instrumental in the program to improve the Veteran's Memorial at the Fountain Circle moving the former memorial from Eaton Corporation there and creating a brick path with veteran's names on and seating areas for visitors. Cliff will be remembered for the many times he spoke at Memorial Day and Veteran's Day ceremonies at the memorial site.
...Cliff served with the Marengo Township Fire Department from 1962 until the early 1990's. He served as a firefighter and was Assistant Chief for 22 years.
...Cliff is survived by his brother Richard (Barbara) Wise of Marshall and sister Rosalee Wise of Marshall and Mary Jane (Dave) Wedel of Marshall; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis, his parents and step-mother Genevieve Wise, sisters Andree Beattie and Cindy Lou Wise and a nephew Ricky Wise.

Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, Nov. 4, at 1:30PM with Rev. James Codde officiating.
