Staff Sgt. Ari R. Cullers, 28, of New London, Conn., died Oct. 30, in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered when an insurgent rocket-propelled grenade exploded near him. He was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y. He was the son of Robin Cornele of Waterford, and was a 2001 graduate of Waterford High School. He is survived by his mother Robin E. Cornele of Waterford, his step-father Tim Forsyth, SFC Retired ARNG); his brother Jacob Cullers of Waterford who served in the Air Force from 2005 until 2009 and served seven month at Camp Bucca in Iraq. He is also survived by four uncles, Daniel Colman of Niantic, Kimball Poletti of Salem, Shawn Cornele of New Haven, Jeffery Epperson of Florida; four aunts, Carol Coleman of New London, Pamela Coleman of Waterford, Kathy Coleman of New London and Patricia Burt of Norwich. Surviving cousins include Lance Bernacki of Waterford; Heather Martin of Waterford; Martina McCullough of New London; Hillary Caponey of Virginia Beach; Christopher Poletti of Salem and Britt Huhn of New London. He was predeceased by his grandmother Madeline Epperson. Calling hours are scheduled from noon until 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at Camp Niantic, followed by a funeral service to be conducted at 3 p.m. Interment will be private at the request of the family. Memorial contributions in his name may be directed to Wounded Warriors.
