U.S. Congressman. He completed preparatory studies, studied law at the Litchfield Law School Connecticut, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Sparta, Georgia, in 1808. During the Creek Indian War, he served as a Second Lieutenant and aide-de-camp to Brigadier General Floyd, (1813-14). After the war, he resumed the practice of law in Milledgeville, Georgia and was a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives, (1814-17). In 1817, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifteenth Congress and to the Sixteenth Congress, serving until 1821. After his term, he was a commissioner to run the boundary line between Alabama and Georgia, in 1826 and a member of the Georgia State Senate, (1827-28). He also was a Georgia State commissioner to locate and construct the Western & Atlantic Railroad, in 1837.
