NORFOLK - A. Hugh Chapman Jr., 91, died peacefully in his sleep Feb. 2, 2009. The son of A. Hugh Sr. and Irene Chapman , Hugh grew up in Greenville, S.C. After graduation from Clemson, he attended Princeton Graduate College of Architecture and then served in the Army's 653rd Engineering Battalion during World War II. Hugh practiced architecture in Spartanburg, S.C., for more than 40 years. During this time, he was very active in the First Presbyterian Church and numerous civic and professional endeavors including serving as president of the South Carolina chapter of the American Institute of Architecture. Since moving to Norfolk in 1999, Hugh was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club of Norfolk.

Hugh is survived by a son, John Chapman , John's wife, Cynthia and two grandsons, Brian and Cory. He is also survived by his wife, Virginia Asby Chapman ; her daughter, Alice; her two sons, Bert and Tom and their wives Carrie and Kathy; and four granddaughters, Courtney and her husband Chad, Meredith, Lauren and Olivia. Hugh's first wife, Jean Jamieson Chapman , predeceased him in 1992.

A memorial service will be held at Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church in Norfolk Wednesday at 1 p.m. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National MS Society, the Alzheimer's Association or a charity of one's choice.
