John W. Messer, 68, former jailer of Johnson County and retired miner, died at 6:10 p. m., Aug 22 at his home at West Van Lear after an illness of about two years. Cause of death was attributed to complications. Mr. Messer was born in Carter County on July 4, 1883, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Messer. He had spent almost his entire life in this county, He was a member of the United Baptist Church. Surviving are his widow,Mrs. Vina Webb Messer, two daughters and three sons, Mrs. Hazel Cartwright, Baltimore, Md., Mrs. Ida Spradlin, West Van Lear, Rennie Messer, Earl Messer and Frank Messer all of West Van Lear. He leaves also four sisters and one brother, Mrs. Addie Adams, Ashland, Ky., Mrs. Jennie Castle, Pontiac, Mich., Mrs. Carrie Farley, Kanawha Falls, ?W. Va., Mrs. Mary Ramsey, Pontiac, Mich., and Fred Messer also of Pontiac. Funeral services will be held at the Cedar Grove Church at West Van Lear, Saturday, August 25, at 10:00 a. m. In charge of the services will be Rev. Grover Fannin, Rev. John Crum and Rev. Winfrey Meeks. Burial will be made in the Webb Cemetery at East Point by the Jones Funeral Home.
