James William McEwen, beloved dad, grandpa, brother, and husband to Sharon Elaine, passed away in his home on Friday evening, October 21, 2011. He will be sorely missed by all.
Jim (also known as "J.W." and "G-pa") was born on September 5, 1935 to William Henry and Viola Johanna (Kirkpatrick) McEwen. He was raised on the family ranch near Piedmont, South Dakota, and graduated from Piedmont High School in 1953.
Jim married his high school sweetheart, Elaine, and they shared 53 years together before Elaine passed away in December 2007.
Jim retired from the South Dakota Army National Guard in 1991. However, he continued to hold various positions with several National Guard associations and also continued to administer the Insurance Program for SD National Guard members.
He was still acting in a key role on a national level with Payroll Deduction Coordination and was a very active Elks member and current Lodge Treasurer.
He also served on the local Election Board. He formerly volunteered for the Pennington County Sheriff's Department and was the former Treasurer for the Elks Country Estates Homeowner's Association.
He enjoyed researching family genealogy, enjoyed lunches with the SDNG Retired Association and dinners with the travel club, loved pulling the handles in Deadwood, playing poker with new friends at Westhills Village, and especially loved anything to do with computers.
In his younger years he enjoyed bowling, snowmobiling, hunting, and took up golf later in his life. He still had dear friends he regularly golfed with on Wednesdays.
Jim appreciated his close relationships with his family, and they regularly gathered together for holidays and family vacations. Jim enjoyed many years of traveling the country in conjunction with his various affiliations.
He and Elaine also enjoyed trips with friends and snowmobile outings during their years in co-ownership of the Parkway Café.
Jim lived every day to its fullest and served his country, family and friends with enthusiasm, honor and pride.
He is survived by one son, Gary McEwen and wife Jaclyn of Hume, VA, and their sons, Scott, Brian and Colin; two daughters, Peggy Schroeder and husband Myron of Hagerstown, MD, and Nancy Hughes and husband Jeff of Salt Lake City, UT, and their sons Austin and Adam; and his sister Joanne Streiffert of Lenoir City, TN. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Elaine.
Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 27, 2011, at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City and one hour before services.
Services will be held on Friday, October 28, at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Herb Cleveland officiating.
Burial, with military honors, will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Memorials have been established to Rapid City Elks Lodge 1187 Secretary-Treasurer Building Fund and to Westhills Village Foundation.
Friends and family may sign Jim's online guestbook at www.kirkfuneralhome.com.
