Local man killed in S. C.

An Altoona man was murdered at the home of a former girlfriend near Ladson, S. C. about 5:39 a.m. Sunday.
Gregory S. Lafferty, 28, formerly of Box 460, RD 5, was identified by the office of Magistrate Ralph Knight as the victim.
Donald J. Smith of Charleston Heights, S. C. was arraigned before Knight on a murder charge filed by Capt. Ernest Moultrie, chief of the detective division of the Dorchester County Sheriff's Department.
His office reported Smith stayed overnight at the home of Rhomona Threlkld, 33, of 94 Eagle Creek Road, near Ladson, Lafferty's former girlfriend. Lafferty went to her house early Sunday and reportedly forced his way into the house after she refused to let him in, according to the sheriff's office. Moultrie said Smith exited the bedroom of the Threlkld residence and he and Lafferty got into a fight. Smith is alleged to have shot Lafferty in the living room of the house with a .38-caliber revolver, Moultrie said. He said several shots were fired but only one struck Lafferty who died instantly.
A large pocket knife was found in Lafferty's rear pocket and authorities are investigating to see if it had been used during the incident.
Smith was treated at North Trident Regional Hospital for bruises and cuts suffered in the disturbance.
Smith is in the Dorchester County jail without bond.
