Gerald J. Neyens, 85, of 1605 Rhomberg Ave., died Sunday morning, Oct. 21, 2001, at Stonehill Care Center. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St. Mr. Neyens formerly worked as a pin setter at Holy Trinity Bowling Alley and at Royal Typewriter Co. He was manager at Western Auto Supply Co. and then worked as a civil engineer for the city of Dubuque. He was born on Aug. 3, 1916, in Dubuque, son of John and Alice (Bollinger) Neyens. He married Laura J. Chalder on March 31, 1943, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Dubuque. He served in the Army from 1943 to 1946. He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish. Surviving are his wife, Laura Jane; a son, Steven K. (Leslie) Neyens, of Dubuque; three daughters, Becky L. (Glenn) Walters and Barbara M. Nyheim, both of Dubuque, and Louise M. (Tim) Meyer, of Clear Lake, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Erika, Nicole and George Nauman, Christopher, Nicholas, Rebecca and Alexander Nyheim, and Audra and Alysia Meyer; two step grandchildren, Rick and Pam Walters; and three sisters, Ramona (Ed) Gerhard, Grace Strohmeyer and Rita (Bill) Strohmeyer, all of Dubuque. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Alice Neyens; and three brothers, Claude, Lester and Julius Neyens. A special thank you to three neighbors, Eric Stierman, Les Koerperick and mostly Tom Pitz, who enabled Laura and Jerry to remain in their own home longer.
